Hiking Red Lake Indian River Trail

Hiking the Red Lake Indian River Trail
#1000islands #Thousandislands

It has been a while since we posted a new Thousand Islands hiking trail.  We discovered it on the website and realized it was one we had never heard of before.  From the website we learned it is only a few miles north of Theresa, NY and is not too far from several of the Indian River Conservancy Trails we had hiked.  It is a 2.2 mile loop and was named because the trail (which is really an unpaved access road) takes you from the boat launch parking spot on Indian River to the boat launch site for Red Lake.

One could actually drive from site to site but that would be cheating if you are looking for a lovely hike.  There is a trailmap  on the alltrails website but one doesn't really need map to walk there and back.  According to the DEC, Red Lake is part of the Indian River Lakes system whicn consisters of 18 natural lakes and is a medium depth lake that supports bass, pike, and walleye.  No wonder the parking lot was full.

We enjoyed both the river and the lake, and also the interesting trail in between them. The water levels were quite high on the day we were there so the first part of the walk was through a wetland area. When we neared the lake the road passed through a lovely forested area and we heard a loon crying in the distance.

At the Red Lake boat launch site we enjoyed a full concert of the local frogs.  The parking area was full and this is apparently a very popular spot for kayakers.

It was a lovely and peaceful walk in one of the many beautiful spots we have discovered in the Indian River Lakes area.
