CLAYTON, New York (December 2, 2014) – The Antique Boat Museum (ABM), North America’s premier freshwater nautical museum based in Clayton, New York, announced today that a local military family and two of the North Country’s well-known television personalities will ride aboard the Museum’s parade ‘float’ during this Saturday’s [12/6/14] annual Clayton Christmas Parade.

The family of 3rd Brigade Combat Team Executive Officer, Major Sean Morrow, will ride aboard the Museum’s 33-foot sedan commuter, Gadfly, serving as special guests of the Museum. Sean, and his wife Meghan, will be joined by their three children. Sean currently serves our country with the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum.

In addition, local television personalities Anne Richter and Brian Ashley of WWNY-TV (7News - Watertown) will join the Morrows. Anne and Brian have served as longtime North Country household names while spending the past 30 years in front of the camera. Both also share a strong passion for the water and spend an ample amount of time sailing on Lake Ontario.

“We are honored to have the Morrow family, along with Anne and Brian, join us for this festive holiday tradition in Clayton,” Executive Director Frederick Hager shared. “This is our small way of recognizing them for all that they do.”

Wallace in 1994, the boat recently underwent restoration work and returned to service this past August.  Serving as part of the Museum’s in-water fleet and a flagship vessel of the ABM, Gadfly has provided hundreds of Museum patrons with the opportunity to enjoy traveling on the River. CLAYTON, New York (October 9, 2014) – The Antique Boat Museum (ABM), North America’s premier freshwater nautical museum based in Clayton, New York, will host a cross-river, cross-border field trip on Tuesday, October 14.

Students from the Gananoque Secondary School in Gananoque, Ontario will venture across the St. Lawrence River aboard a Gananoque Boat Line tour boat to the ABM for an educational visit.

As part of an outreach program being offered by the newly formed Thousand Islands Boat Museum (TIBM) in Gananoque, students in wood shop classes (grades 9 through 12) will be working on building an International Optimist Dinghy, better known as Opti, throughout the school year. The goal will be to have a small fleet of boats ready for use in a sailing program at the TIBM in 2015.

The field trip will be led by ABM Educator Julie Broadbent, along with staff of the TIBM.

This will mark the second trip in as many years for Gananoque students.

Taking the Gold, by M.A. Noble - Exciting new book with Singer Castle as its setting.

Author M.A. Noble presenting Singer Castle president Tom Weldon with her new book, Taking the Gold. Set on a tall ship, the plot culminates with numerous scenes in Singer Castle.

Maybe you know about Singer Castle’s hidden levers and secret passages. Maybe you know the manicured north lawn hides tons of imported topsoil. But have you ever wondered what that dirt conceals? Have you heard claims of a ghost that stalks the grounds on full-moonlit nights?

Fact blends with fiction in M. A. Noble’s novel Taking the Gold, set on a tall ship returning to the 1000 Islands. The author, also known as Margaret (Mag) Hockett, fell in love with the castle as a young woman employed by Dr. and Mrs. Harold Martin in the 70s to do housecleaning.

“Every detail of this replica of an old English castle and its island setting arouses a sense of romance, mystery, and magic. I was thrilled when Tom Weldon invited me to revisit the castle. I learned things I never knew as I dusted and vacuumed each room.”

Margaret worked for several educational publishers in California before returning to the North Country. She now writes novels, nonfiction, and lyrics. In her first novel, Taking Hart, also set in the Islands, teenaged Corey Worder solved the mystery of his War-of-1812 ancestry and his mother’s disappearance. Now, in Taking the Gold, he must set sail to face his father. As they race to find the British gold, an SOS from Singer Castle means Corey must forfeit the treasure. Or does it? The castle holds more secrets than anyone could have guessed.

Shortly after the bride arrived on Dark Island to
prepare for the ceremony a fisherman pulled up to the
dock and told castle staff that a large white bird was
on the ground near the west side of the island and we
were able to get pictures of the Snowy Owl there.

As soon as the wedding ceremony commenced the Snowy Owl
flew up and perched on the roof of the Squash Court
with a bird’s eye view of the proceedings. Then the
owl flew around the grounds to perch east of the
Pergola. It continued watching the festivities all
through the evening allowing staff and wedding guests
to take numerous photos as the day went on. As soon
as all of the wedding guests departed, the owl flew
away and has not been seen since.

The following morning Mike mentioned to castle staff
members that the Snowy Owl had been his late mother's
favorite bird.

While at the castle, the four are drawing inspiration from the Castle’s mystique, beauty and environment to create a new board game.

“Having grown up in the North Country, there is no place more beautiful in the summer months,” said Brenda Romero, a native of Ogdensburg, NY.” This visit home, we decided to fulfill a childhood dream of mine and stay in Singer Castle.” The couple rented the castle for several nights and already has plans to return. John Romero is best known for creating the first person shooter genre with games like DOOM, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D. He has created over 140 games, founded 10 game companies and won every major game industry award. Brenda Romero, on the other hand, worked on the Wizardry series, Dungeons & Dragons and has recently achieved notoriety with a series of analog board games. Dan McAuliffe is studio director, executive producer and veteran mobile game developer who has worked on dozens of major game titles. He is currently forming his next venture.

“The castle on Dark Island is so beautiful and provides great inspiration for game ideas,” says John Romero. “So, we are all collaborating on multiple game ideas based on the mystery and history of the castle.”

Oh, Say Can You See That Beautiful Wedding at Singer Castle?

Oh, Say Can You See That Beautiful Wedding at Singer Castle?

Here at Singer Castle on Dark Island, various weddings and events are, while always exciting and unique, a rather common occurrence. On July 5 of our current 2014 summer season, however, a wedding all in its own rite came to our beloved castle. Amanda Nagle, from New Jersey and Cole Streit, from the Canton-Pierrepont area, honored us with their presence for their especially patriotic wedding ceremony. Not only was this wedding delightfully nationalistic due to the couple’s chosen date, just one day after the anniversary of America’s independence, and the groom's graciously appreciated service in the American Navy, but also because of their chosen colors. The groom and his best man, also the groom’s twin brother and fellow Navy member, were dressed in their dress whites. The bride was dressed in a lovely blue dress, with her maid of honor in red. As the bride walked down the rose garden isle to the tune of festive bagpipes magic filled the air. “It was a very patriotic wedding,” says Corbin Clemons, a tour guide at here at Singer Castle, “we were honored to have it here and to help facilitate their special day. It was very beautiful, filled with red, white, blue and love.”

---Meredith Ouderkirk, Tour Guide at Singer Castle.

The minister was my father, Craig M. Streit, he was also in the Navy years ago, the best man was Craig W. Streit my twin brother who is in the Navy and myself. The brides maid was Amanda's (Nagle) sister Brittany L. Nagle and the flower girl was my 2nd cousin Clair Polniak.

---Cole Streit, Groom.

About River Community Wellness Program

The River Community Wellness Program (RCWP) at River Hospital provides intensive outpatient behavioral health services for active duty military personnel stationed at Fort Drum. RCWP provides continuity of care for soldiers transitioning from an inpatient stay. It also serves as an intensive intervention option for mental health services locally to reduce potential admissions of service members to an inpatient level of care, focusing instead on building coping skills and supports in the community. It is the only program of its kind in the United States. The program keeps military members close to home while they are healing and learning to cope, using multiple forms of therapies such as Cognitive Processing Therapy, Group and Individual Therapy, Movement Therapy, Peer to Peer Therapy, Imaginal and In Vivo Exposure Therapy, as well as Psychiatry and Medication Management.

Northern New York State Photographer, Bruce Dana, captures (in photos) 2 huge Muskies!

Flora and Fauna in the Thousand Islands Series

Bruce Dana, photographer, has shared these recent photos of two large muskie fish off from his own dock in Morristown NY.

Bruce estimates the larger fish to be over 40 inches long based upon how they dwarf the tire in the upper left.

Fishing season for muskellunge opens on the third Saturday during June in his area, but it is never out of season to grab a great shot with the camera. Photos by his permission. Thanks Bruce!

Previously posted for this nature series: Eagles, more eagles, Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly. (Frequent postings are now anticipated, so check back often). Your photos or stories are welcome too.

STEAMBOATS SET TO ‘BLOW OFF STEAM’ AT ANTIQUE BOAT MUSEUM

CLAYTON, New York (June 9, 2014) – The Antique Boat Museum announced today that the Great International Steamboat Flotilla (GISF) returns to the Museum and 1000 Islands region for a third straight year beginning June 15 through June 21.

For the past two years, the GISF has made the ABM a gathering place and have captured the attention of those on the river.

“It (ABM) is a great venue for the GISF steamboat meet,” shared Carl Kriegeskotte, GISF spokesperson, last fall. “We all look forward to our return.”

Steamboats will come and go from the ABM docks over the course of the week as the group enjoys the region, as well as the Museum. On Monday, June 16 from 5-7 p.m., the public is invited to come to the ABM for a free “meet and greet” event with the steamboat captains and explore their boats.

Approximately 15-20 steamboats will make the ABM their ‘homeport,’ while traveling throughout the region daily. The boats will be fueled by firewood provided by Hazlewood Mechanical and Wood Boat Brewery.

The ABM, now open daily 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., is home to North America’s largest antique boat collection with more than 300 boats and over 1,000 boating artifacts.
