We had been planning to visit the Coyote Flats State Forest located in Theresa (just off of Rt 81N) and finally got to do so today.  We had heard about this beautiful 553-acre state forest, and that it had an accessible road that cut through the middle of it.  It is just about a mile to the end of gravel road making this a lovely 2 mile hike.

To get there from 81 take the Theresa exist onto Route 411 east. Travel about 1/4 mile and turn right on Snell road (which becomes Drake Road).  Look for the DEC sign in about two miles. There is a small parking area at the trailhead of what the DEC calls the Coyote Trail.   The one-mile trail is also a designated motorized access route for people with disabilities, for hunting and wildlife viewing.

We enjoyed the hike down this wide and well-maintained trail through the deep woods.  At the end of the trail the road dead ends at a marsh and wetland area that is very lovely.  

We would highly recommend this trail in particular for those just getting started in hiking. It is easy and beautiful, and not difficult to find. 

Our one word of caution is to stay on the trail. We have heard from other hikers that it is easy to get lost in the woods. You can enjoy the forest just as well without ever needing to leave the trail.
