Hiking Maple City Trail
#1000islands #ThousandIslands
Every once in a while it is nice to take a nature hike
that doesn’t involve tall grass, Deet, or GPS.
We heard about the Maple City Trail when the Seaway Youth For Christ did
a fundraising walk on this 2.2 mile city river walk located in Ogdensburg. We missed that hike but after seeing a few
pictures of the lovely views from this paved walkway, we figured we should
check it out for ourselves (and for you!).
There are
numerous access points to the trail so one can pretty much do as long or as
short a hike as they would like. But there is nice scenery all along the way
and at both the beginning and end of the trail so we suggest hiking it from
start to finish and back. The trail
starts near the waterfront at the Ogdensburg Visitors’ Center at 100 Riverside
Ave and then wanders alongside the lovely Oswegatchie River. It goes over,
under, and across several bridges along the way actually taking hikers over the
Spring Street Bridge and then along the southern shore of the river, under Rte
37 and ultimately to the wall at the end barring hikers from going over an old
railroad trestle (yes, a portion of the trail is another rails-to-trails former
railroad.
There is a lot to see including wildlife, water fowl, lovely
flora (we enjoyed the water lilies) and one of the best views we have seen of
the Ogdensburg lighthouse near the trailhead.
The Ogdensburg website states that access for the trail
is also available from from Crescent Street behind the U.S. Post Office, at the
old Pumphouse along the Oswegatchie River, at the Maple City Walking Bridge
near Hosmer’s Marina on West River Street and at the Spring Street Bridge off
Lake Street.
