Hiking Keewaydin State
Park
#1000islands #ThousandIslands
Keewaydin State Park, which is located right on the
river, has a marina, camp ground and pool. But hikers will be delighted to know
it also has a hiking trail that runs right along one of the most scenic spots
in the river. AND, new to us in 2018, there is an additional hiking trail
extending from the end of the waterfront trail that winds through a beautiful
forested area for perhaps another mile or so before ending at the parking lot
behind the pool.
Keewaydin is located on Rt 12 just west of Alexandria
Bay NY. We have often gone there to wander along the half-mile waterfront trail.
But last time we were there, we noticed that the trail no
longer ended at the eastern end of the park. A lovely and clearly marked trail
winded around the corner and back into the woods.
The trail had bright NYS markers on the trees that made
it easy to follow.
We would note, however, that there were a few rocks to
climb up or down, so we would not advise this trail to someone looking for an
easy hike on a level path.
But if you want to explore a beautiful trail passing
through a variety of foresty terrains, the hiking trail at Keewaydin State Park
is definitely worth checking out. We would also note that at the time we
visited, there was no trailhead marking at either end of the new trail. So, the
easiest way to find it would be to follow the original trail along the
waterfront. We think you’ll enjoy it as much as we did! We are guessing that
more signage will be coming in the future. But in the mean time, you heard it
here first.
