Hiking the Abbé Picquet Trail
#1000islands #ThousandIslands
We have driven by the site of the historic Fort de la
Presentation in Ogdensburg NY many times but never thought we would get to hike
it. On July 7, 2018, the one mile Abbe Picquet walking trail was opened to the
public at the former site of this French fort built in 1749 on Van Rensselaer
Point.
The site is considered to be the birthplace of modern-day
Ogdensburg and the fort was said to have been constructed there by French troops
and Oswegatchie Native Americans. The trail was one more step (pun intended) in
the ongoing work of the Fort la Presentation Association. Hikers will see the Abbe Picquet monument and
interpretive signs along the trail. So, one is getting good history at the same
time one is getting good exercise.
And we had to include it
in our hiking blog because one is also getting some beautiful River views. The
trail loops and also has numerous side trails so one can walk as little or as
much as one wants.
In addition to great river views on both sides, and
fabulous river breezes, the trail also includes one of the closest and best
views of the Ogdensburg light house that we have ever seen.
We loved our Abbe Picquet hike and will no doubt be back.
