Antique Boat Museum and River Hospital Re-Launch Partnership; Blue Star Involvement

ABM continues to be one of more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer

[See 5/22/15 update at the end of this article: Contains Statement Regarding Partnership with River Hospital]

CLAYTON, New York (May 20, 2015) – The Antique Boat Museum (ABM), North America’s premier freshwater nautical museum based in Clayton, NY, along with River Hospital of Alexandria Bay, NY, announced today that their award winning partnership will re-launch and span the 2015 summer calendar in support of our armed forces.

Beginning May 22, the Antique Boat Museum will feature a new exhibition located in the Haxall Building, which will run through the early fall, relating to the River Community Wellness Program (RCWP) based at River Hospital.

The RCWP at River Hospital provides intensive outpatient behavioral health services for active duty military personnel stationed at Ft. Drum. RCWP provides continuity of care for soldiers transitioning from an inpatient stay. It also serves as an intensive intervention option for mental health services locally to reduce potential admissions of service members to an inpatient level of care, focusing instead on building coping skills and supports in the community. It is the only program of its kind in the United States. The program keeps military members close to home while they are healing and learning to cope, using multiple forms of therapies such as Cognitive Processing Therapy, Group and Individual Therapy, Movement Therapy, Peer to Peer Therapy, Imaginal and In Vivo Exposure Therapy, as well as Psychiatry and Medication Management.

Through this partnership, the artwork and creative writing that has been done in recent years as part of Creative Arts Therapy will go on display to the public at the ABM.

In addition to the exhibition, participants in the RCWP will also be given the opportunity to explore the region’s beauty by climbing aboard one of the Museum’s in-water fleet boats to cruise the islands for relaxation and meditation time, as required by the program.

In the spring, the ABM and River Hospital partnership was recognized in Syracuse as a Non-Profit Collaborative Award recipient.

Along with the RCWP partnership, the ABM announced today that it will again serve as one of more than 2,000 Blue Star Museums across the country, providing complimentary admission to active military and their immediate families.

“With our close proximity to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, the nation’s most deployed installation, and the 174th Attack Wing at Hancock Field, we feel as an institution that it is important to play a local role in the support of the troops we consider to be our friends and neighbors,” explained ABM Director of Marketing & Communications, Michael Folsom. “We look forward to engaging with those who visit us and hope to provide them with an enjoyable experience.”

In addition, River Hospital will again serve as the Official Sponsor of the Armed Forces at the Museum throughout the 2015 season, helping to underwrite those Blue Star admission fees, as well as the admission fees of all active and retired military members during the upcoming 51st annual Antique Boat Show to be held July 31 – August 2.

“Blue Star Museums has grown into a nationally recognized program that service members and their families look forward to each year,” said Blue Star Families Chief Executive Officer Kathy Roth-Douquet.
“It helps bring our local military and civilian communities together, and offers families fun and enriching activities in their home towns. We are thrilled with the continued growth of the program and the unparalleled opportunities it offers.”

This year, museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa are taking part in the initiative. Museums are welcome to join Blue Star Museums throughout the summer. The effort to recruit museums has involved partnerships with the American Alliance of Museums, the Association of Art Museum Directors, the Association of Children’s Museums, the American Association of State and Local History, and the Association of Science-Technology Centers. This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just fine arts museums, but also science museums, history museums, nature centers, and dozens of children’s museums.

Antique Boat Museum to Host Exhibit Opening Reception - Celebrating the opening of two newest exhibits

Event is free of charge and catered by DiPrinzio’s and Coyote Moon

CLAYTON, New York (May 20, 2015) – The Antique Boat Museum (ABM), North America’s premier freshwater nautical museum based in Clayton, NY, announced today the details of its newest exhibits and formal opening reception.

Join the ABM on Friday, May 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. inside the Haxall Building, located at 750 Mary Street in Clayton, for a reception as we celebrate the opening of our two newest exhibits – Canoes to Go and Paintings by John Cooper Upham.

The event is free and will feature live music by Sam Hopkins, food catered by DiPrinzio’s, and local wines by Coyote Moon Winery. All are welcome to attend.

About Canoes to Go

Over the past century, canoeists have taken advantage of new modes of water transportation. From collapsible to new age styles made of corrugated plastic, canoes have evolved and remain one of the most portable means of passage. Canoes have long been known as elegant and effective on the water, while typically being lightweight and sometimes even compact.

The Canoes to Go exhibit, on loan from the Canadian Canoe Museum located in Peterborough, Ontario, hosts a wide array of canoe styles from throughout the ages. This fun and interactive exhibit demonstrates how canoes were stowed away in duffle bags, taken apart and carried in pieces, or even tied alongside an older model car. In addition, visitors are encouraged to jump into a canoe to catch a fish or use a foot pump to inflate a cloak.

The exhibit, which is presented in English and French, is showcased inside the Dodge Gallery at the ABM.

About Paintings by John Cooper Upham

The Paintings by John Cooper Upham exhibit features 25 unique renderings of historic steamships, or better known as steamers, that used to frequent the 1000 Islands region.

Born in 1900, Upham spent many of his years summering at the family’s cottage located near Point Vivian, along the main shipping channel, just outside of Alexandria Bay. The Watertown native was captivated by the steamers that would pass by on a regular basis and he began to document the vessels in detailed pastels and paintings.

Throughout the era, steamers served as the only means of transportation to island locations. These ships were known for moving both passengers and freight. By 1910, there were nearly a dozen steamers operating between Alexandria Bay and Clayton and making several stops at various island communities or the once majestic hotels. Over time each of the steamers was met with an unfortunate fate and now their stories live on through Upham’s brilliant work.

CLAYTON, New York (May 15, 2015) – Calling all volunteers!

The Antique Boat Museum (ABM) is seeking new and returning volunteers for the 2015 season.

Join the staff of the ABM and the Volunteer Council on Thursday, May 21 at 9 a.m. to learn about the various activities and duties the Museum seeks assistance with this season. Each year, the ABM leans heavily on the willing helping hands of the river community to orchestrate numerous events, guided tours, boat rides and more.

In 2014, more than 150 people volunteered 12,000 work hours to the ABM, which allowed for successful events such as Family Day, 1000 Islands Concours d’Elegance Classic Car Show, and the 10-day celebration of the 50th annual Antique Boat Show and Auction. In addition to assisting with events, volunteers also played a key role in on-site boat building, various classes, grounds keeping, museum store operations, and other tasks necessary to the success of the ABM.

The ABM’s Volunteer Council will introduce new incentive programs for the 2015 season. Any current (as of 2014) volunteer, who recruits a new volunteer that dedicates a minimum of 15 hours this season, will receive a special two-hour wine and cheese cruise on an ABM ride boat. In addition, any volunteer to work 15 hours or more specifically over Boat Show weekend will be entitled to a 51st Annual Antique Boat Show commemorative souvenir.

If you are interested in joining us at the Museum this summer as a volunteer, be sure to attend on May 21 for a complimentary breakfast, catered by The Clipper Inn, and an information session.

GILDED AGE HOUSEBOAT TO CROSS INTERNATIONAL BORDER FOR DRYDOCKING

112 year old artifact headed to Kingston, Ontario

CLAYTON, New York (May 6, 2015) – The Antique Boat Museum (ABM), North America’s premier freshwater nautical museum based in Clayton, New York, announced today that its largest collection artifact, La Duchesse, will head to drydock at MetalCraft Marine in Kingston, Ontario for routine inspection and hull maintenance.

La Duchesse is expected to depart the ABM on the morning of Friday, May 8 and float across the St. Lawrence River, with assistance from Patch Seaway International, to Kingston. The boat will likely remain for at least 10 days before its return trip to Clayton.

Patch Seaway International, based in Clayton, will act as the towing service since La Duchesse does not have an engine. This trek across the international border for maintenance marks the second time in the past 10 years since becoming a collection piece of the Museum.

The 106-foot houseboat is an iconic piece relating to river lifestyles from more than one hundred years ago. Built in 1903 for hotelier George Boldt, manager of New York City’s famed Waldorf-Astoria hotel, the houseboat had once been owned by E.J. Noble and later acquired by the McNally family.  The houseboat was the first planned gift made to ABM and was received as a bequest from the late Andrew McNally, III, who lived aboard during the summer months. The vessel opened for visitors at the Museum in July of 2005 and each year more than 10,000 visitors enjoy the opportunity to climb aboard to see her luxurious interior and one-of-a-kind furnishings, while hearing the story of this unique two-story summer home.

In recent years, local contractors, ABM staff, and multiple volunteers have worked to rebuild stairwells, refinish flooring, clean the interior, and work is currently being completed on a second floor balcony. Over the course of this past winter, all window casings were rebuilt in the ongoing effort to restore the boat to her original glory.

La Duchesse will reopen to visitors at the ABM later this month. Tours of the houseboat are included with the price of Museum admission.

About ABM

Located on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York, the ABM features a collection of over 300 antique and classic boats, among thousands of recreational boating artifacts, including the world’s largest runabout, Pardon Me. In 2015, the ABM will host the 51st annual Antique Boat Show and Auction, the longest running such show in North America. For more information, please visit the Museum’s website at abm.org.
